20% Chance of Rain — Probably Dry

April 24, 2026

What Does 20% Chance of Rain Mean?

When a weather forecast says there is a 20% chance of rain, it means that 20 out of 100 times the same atmospheric conditions occur, it rains in your area. It does not mean it will rain for 20% of the day, nor that 20% of the area will see rain.

Think of it this way: it is like rolling a 1 on a six-sided die — possible, but you would not bet on it.

Should You Carry an Umbrella?

A 20% chance means rain is possible but improbable. Most people skip the umbrella at this level, and most of the time they are right.

How Forecasters Calculate Rain Probability

Meteorologists combine two factors:

  1. Confidence — How certain they are that rain-producing conditions exist.
  2. Coverage — What percentage of the forecast area is expected to see rain.

The probability of precipitation (PoP) is their product. If a forecaster is 80% confident and expects 50% coverage, the PoP is 0.8 × 0.5 = 40%.

Common Misconceptions

  • It will rain for 20% of the day — Wrong. PoP says nothing about duration.
  • 20% of the area will get wet — Not quite. Coverage is an input, not the output.
  • The forecast is 20% accurate — No. Accuracy and probability are different things.

Practical Decision Guide

ProbabilityOutdoor PlansWhat to Bring

The Bottom Line

A 20% chance of rain means: probably dry. You are probably safe to leave the umbrella at home.
