70% Chance of Rain — Rain Is Likely

April 25, 2026

What Does 70% Chance of Rain Mean?

When a weather forecast says there is a 70% chance of rain, it means that 70 out of 100 times the same atmospheric conditions occur, it rains in your area. It does not mean it will rain for 70% of the day, nor that 70% of the area will see rain.

Think of it this way: if you drew a ball from a bag of 10, seven of them would say rain.

Should You Carry an Umbrella?

At 70%, the odds favour rain. Carry an umbrella or rain jacket. If you have outdoor plans, consider a backup option.

How Forecasters Calculate Rain Probability

Meteorologists combine two factors:

  1. Confidence — How certain they are that rain-producing conditions exist.
  2. Coverage — What percentage of the forecast area is expected to see rain.

The probability of precipitation (PoP) is their product. If a forecaster is 80% confident and expects 50% coverage, the PoP is 0.8 × 0.5 = 40%.

Common Misconceptions

  • It will rain for 70% of the day — Wrong. PoP says nothing about duration.
  • 70% of the area will get wet — Not quite. Coverage is an input, not the output.
  • The forecast is 70% accurate — No. Accuracy and probability are different things.

The Bottom Line

A 70% chance of rain means: rain is likely. Plan for rain but do not cancel your day — showers may be brief.
