Best Time to Visit New York — Weather Guide

March 31, 2026

New York Has Real Seasons

Unlike tropical cities where the temperature barely moves, New York experiences the full range. Winters are genuinely cold. Summers are genuinely hot and humid. And somewhere between those extremes lie the two best windows to visit.

The Best Time: April–June and September–October

April to June — Spring Into Early Summer

April brings Central Park's cherry blossoms and magnolias into bloom. Temperatures climb from a pleasant 17°C to a warm 27°C. The city shakes off winter, outdoor dining ramps up, and the streets fill with energy.

May is arguably the single best month. Highs of 22°C, long daylight hours (about 14.5 hours by late May), and low humidity. You can walk for hours without overheating or freezing. Brooklyn Bridge at sunset, High Line in the afternoon, Central Park all day.

June is great through mid-month. Late June starts getting humid, with heat index readings pushing above 32°C on some days.

September to October — The Golden Window

September eases out of summer heat. By mid-September, the suffocating humidity breaks and highs settle around 25°C. October is the crown jewel — 18°C highs, 11°C lows, fall colour in Central Park, and the fewest rain days of any month (8). The light is golden, the air is crisp, and the city looks its absolute best.

When to Avoid

January–February (Unless You Love Cold)

Average highs are 4–5°C, but wind chill in Manhattan's street canyons can make it feel like -10°C. The wind tunnels between skyscrapers amplify cold air dramatically. Snow and ice make sidewalks treacherous, and a nor'easter (major winter storm) can dump 30–50cm of snow in a single event.

That said, if you want cheap hotels, short lines at museums, and a moody, atmospheric New York, winter has its appeal. Just pack serious cold-weather gear.

Late July–August (Humid and Oppressive)

The raw temperature (29–30°C) doesn't sound bad. The humidity makes it awful. Relative humidity in July and August averages 65–70%, pushing the feels-like temperature to 34–38°C. The subway platforms — which are not air-conditioned — become noticeably sweltering. Walking more than a few blocks leaves you drenched.

August also brings the most intense thunderstorms. Sudden downpours with lightning are common on summer afternoons.

What to Pack by Season

Spring (April–May): Layers. Light jacket, sweater, t-shirts. One rain jacket. Temperature can swing 12°C in a single day.

Summer (June–August): Light, breathable fabrics. Shorts and t-shirts. Sunscreen (UV index 7–9). A portable fan or cooling towel isn't overkill in August.

Fall (September–October): The best packing season. Jeans, light sweater, medium jacket. Maybe a scarf for evening.

Winter (December–February): Heavy coat, thermal base layers, gloves, scarf, beanie, waterproof insulated boots. Do not underestimate how cold wind chill makes Manhattan.

Shoulder Season Strategy

The real insider move is booking the last week of September or first two weeks of October. Summer crowds have thinned, hotel prices drop 20–30% from peak summer rates, the weather is ideal, and the fall colour hasn't peaked yet (so you catch the transition). It's the sweet spot within the sweet spot.

The Bottom Line

New York is a year-round city, but the weather makes a massive difference in your experience. Aim for May or October for the best combination of temperatures, low humidity, and manageable crowds.
