Cycling in Different Conditions
Wind
Wind is the cyclist's biggest enemy. A 30 km/h headwind requires the same effort as climbing a moderate hill.
Tips: Plan routes with the headwind on the outbound leg and tailwind returning. Use sheltered routes (tree-lined roads, urban corridors) on windy days.
Rain
Wet roads reduce tyre grip, especially on corners and painted road markings.
Tips: Reduce speed by 20%, brake earlier and more gently, avoid metal grates and manhole covers. Wear a cycling cap under your helmet to keep rain off your face.
Heat (Above 28°C)
- Start early (before 8am) or ride in the evening
- Apply sunscreen every 2 hours
- Carry extra water; drink every 15 minutes
- Wear light, ventilated clothing
Cold (Below 5°C)
- Cover extremities: thermal gloves, shoe covers, ear-covering hat
- Wind chill at cycling speed is brutal — wind-blocking outer layer essential
- Warm up for 15-20 minutes; your body takes longer to generate heat in cold
- Overshoes prevent numb toes
Layering for Cycling
| Temp Range | Layers |
|---|---|
| Above 25°C | Jersey only |
| 15-25°C | Jersey + arm warmers |
| 5-15°C | Base layer + jersey + gilet |
| Below 5°C | Thermal base + jersey + winter jacket |
