June 13, 2026

Desert Weather Characteristics

  • Extreme temperature swings: 40°C+ during the day, near freezing at night
  • Almost zero humidity: Dry air makes heat more bearable but dehydration faster
  • Intense UV: Clear skies and reflective sand amplify sun exposure
  • Minimal rainfall: Some deserts receive less than 25mm per year
  • Sudden sandstorms: Can reduce visibility to zero in minutes

Desert Survival Rules

  1. Water: Carry minimum 4 litres per person per day; drink before you feel thirsty
  2. Sun protection: Hat, SPF 50+, long sleeves, sunglasses — non-negotiable
  3. Timing: All outdoor activities should be early morning or late afternoon
  4. Navigation: Always tell someone your itinerary; carry GPS
  5. Layers: You need both sun protection for day and warm layers for night

Night Sky Bonus

Deserts offer some of the best stargazing on Earth. Zero light pollution, zero humidity, and clear skies reveal the Milky Way in stunning detail. Bring binoculars or a small telescope.
