Fishing Weather Guide — When Fish Bite Best

June 21, 2026

How Weather Affects Fish Behaviour

Fish are cold-blooded and sensitive to environmental changes. Weather directly affects their metabolism, feeding patterns, and location in the water column.

Barometric Pressure and Fishing

Pressure TrendFish BehaviourStrategy
Falling (storm approaching)Active feeding — best fishingFish fast, cover water
Low and stableSluggish, deepSlow presentations, go deeper
Rising (after storm)Gradually more activeStart slow, increase as pressure rises
High and stableNormal activityStandard techniques work

Best Fishing Weather

The 24-48 hours before a weather front arrives is often the most productive fishing period. Fish sense the pressure drop and feed aggressively before the storm.

Wind and Fishing

  • Light wind (5-15 km/h): Ideal — creates ripple that conceals you from fish, pushes food toward wind-facing banks
  • No wind: Fish are spooky in glassy calm; use lighter tackle and stealthy approaches
  • Strong wind (25+ km/h): Fish the sheltered side of the lake; casting accuracy suffers

Temperature Guide

Water TempFreshwater ActivityStrategy
Below 5°CVery slowSlow, deep, small baits
5-10°CPicking upMedium presentations
10-18°CPeak activityWide range of techniques
18-22°CActiveTopwater works well
Above 24°CStressed, deepFish early morning, deep water

Moon Phase and Tides (Saltwater)

  • Moving tide (2 hours before and after high/low): Best fishing — water movement pushes bait around
  • Slack tide: Slowest fishing — wait for the next movement
  • Full/new moon: Strongest tides, often better fishing
  • Quarter moon: Weaker tides, less predictable
