Hiking by Season

Spring

  • Trails may be muddy from snowmelt
  • Wildflowers at lower elevations
  • Streams and waterfalls at peak flow
  • Variable weather — pack for rain and cold

Summer

  • Longest daylight hours for big days
  • Afternoon thunderstorms in mountains (start early, descend by 1pm)
  • Heat risk on exposed trails — carry extra water
  • Best high-altitude conditions (snow-free passes)

Autumn

  • Stable weather, cool temperatures, stunning foliage
  • Shorter days — plan finish time carefully
  • Trail maintenance may end; paths rougher
  • Best season for hiking in many regions

Winter

  • Short days limit distance
  • Ice and snow require crampons and poles
  • Avalanche risk in mountains
  • Beautiful solitude — trails are empty

Mountain Weather Rules for Hikers

  1. Start early: Begin by 6-7am to beat afternoon storms
  2. Turn around by early afternoon: If in mountains, descend before 2pm
  3. Check the forecast at trailhead: Conditions change from valley to summit
  4. Watch clouds: Rapidly building cumulus = storms approaching
  5. Summit fever kills: If weather deteriorates, turn back

Packing Weather Essentials

  • Waterproof jacket (even for blue-sky days)
  • Warm layer (fleece or down)
  • Hat and sunscreen
  • 1 litre of water per 2 hours of hiking
  • Emergency blanket
