How Altitude Affects Weather
For every 1,000m of altitude gain:
- Temperature drops by 6.5°C
- UV radiation increases by 10-12%
- Air pressure drops by about 12%
- Oxygen decreases proportionally
Mountain Weather Rules
1. Weather Changes Fast
Mountains create their own weather. A clear morning can become a thunderstorm by afternoon as the sun heats slopes and forces air upward.
2. Temperature Drops With Height
Even if the valley is 25°C, a summit at 3,000m may be just 5°C. Always carry warm layers regardless of conditions at the base.
3. Wind Amplifies on Ridges and Passes
Ridgelines and mountain passes funnel wind, creating gusts far stronger than in the valley. Wind chill can make conditions dangerous.
4. UV Is Stronger
Snow and altitude combine to create extreme UV exposure. Snow reflects 80% of UV rays, effectively doubling your dose.
Packing for Mountain Trips
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Waterproof jacket | Afternoon storms are common |
| Warm fleece or down | Temperatures plummet at altitude |
| Sun hat and SPF 50+ | UV is intense above 2,000m |
| Layers | Temperature can swing 20°C+ in one day |
| Sturdy footwear | Trails are rocky; ankle support matters |
| Emergency blanket | Compact, life-saving if caught in a storm |
Altitude Sickness
Above 2,500m, some people experience altitude sickness: headache, nausea, fatigue. Acclimatise by ascending slowly (no more than 500m sleeping altitude gain per day above 3,000m) and staying hydrated.
