Wind Shifts

Veering wind (shifting clockwise) often means a warm front passing. Backing wind (anti-clockwise) can indicate approaching low pressure and deteriorating conditions.

Weather Windows

A weather window is a period of favourable conditions between weather systems. For passage sailing:

  • Study GRIB weather files for multi-day forecasts
  • Identify the gap between frontal systems
  • Allow buffer time — weather windows can close faster than predicted
  • Plan your route to have refuge options (ports, anchorages) every 6-8 hours

Cloud Reading for Sailors

  • Cirrus increasing: Front approaching in 12-24 hours
  • Cumulus growing tall: Thunderstorm risk in 2-6 hours
  • Low grey stratus: Wind may be light but visibility poor
  • Clear sky: Stable conditions but watch for thermal winds near coasts

Storm Avoidance

  • Never leave port if a storm is forecast within your passage time
  • Monitor VHF weather channels continuously
  • Have sea anchor and storm sails ready
  • Know your boat's and crew's limits — not every weather window is for you
