Tropical Weather Travel Guide — What First-Timers Need to Know

June 12, 2026

Tropical Climate Basics

Tropical regions (roughly between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn) experience:

  • Consistent warmth: 25-35°C year-round with minimal seasonal variation
  • High humidity: 70-90% is normal
  • Two seasons: Wet and dry, not four
  • Intense sun: UV index regularly hits 10-12+
  • Predictable storms: Afternoon thunderstorms are a daily occurrence in wet season

How Tropical Rain Works

Tropical rain is not like temperate drizzle. Expect:

  • Sudden downpours that arrive with little warning
  • Intense but short — often 30-90 minutes
  • Usually afternoon/evening; mornings are typically clear
  • Warm rain — you will not get cold from getting wet

Health Considerations

ConcernPrevention
DehydrationDrink 3+ litres per day; electrolytes help
SunburnSPF 50+, reapply every 2 hours, cover up 10am-2pm
MosquitoesDEET repellent, long sleeves at dusk, check malaria risk
Heat exhaustionRest in shade, pace yourself, acclimatise over 3-5 days
Stomach issuesDrink bottled water, eat cooked food from busy stalls

What to Pack

  • Lightweight, breathable, quick-dry clothing
  • Quality sunscreen and after-sun lotion
  • Insect repellent with DEET or picaridin
  • Waterproof phone case and dry bag
  • Compact umbrella or rain poncho
  • Comfortable sandals and one pair of closed shoes

Acclimatisation

Your body needs 3-7 days to adjust to tropical heat and humidity. During this period, take it easy, stay hydrated, and avoid midday sun.
