Weather and Pets — Keeping Animals Safe in Extreme Conditions

May 31, 2026

Heat Safety

  • Never leave pets in parked cars — even at 22°C outside, a car interior can reach 47°C in an hour
  • Walk dogs early morning or after sunset; hot pavement burns paw pads (test with your palm — 5 seconds)
  • Provide constant access to fresh water and shade
  • Watch for heat stroke signs: excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting
  • Breeds with flat faces (bulldogs, pugs, Persian cats) are especially vulnerable

Cold Weather Safety

  • Short-haired, small, elderly, and very young pets are most at risk
  • Limit outdoor time when temperatures drop below -5°C
  • Consider dog coats or sweaters for small or thin-coated breeds
  • Wipe paws after walks to remove road salt (toxic if licked)
  • Check under car bonnets before starting — cats seek warmth near engines
  • Provide warm bedding away from draughts

Storm Safety

  • Bring all pets indoors well before a storm arrives
  • Create a safe, quiet space away from windows (interior room)
  • Keep pets leashed or crated — frightened animals may bolt
  • Thunder anxiety is common; talk to your vet about calming options
  • Update ID tags and microchip information before storm season

Flood Safety

  • Include pets in your evacuation plan
  • Keep pet carriers, leashes, food, and medications in your emergency kit
  • Never leave pets behind in a flood evacuation
