Weather Emergency Kit — What to Pack and Why

The Essential Kit

Water and Food

  • 4 litres of water per person per day (minimum 3-day supply)
  • Non-perishable food: canned goods, energy bars, dried fruit, nuts
  • Manual can opener
  • Baby food or formula if applicable

Light and Communication

  • LED torch with extra batteries
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank AM/FM radio
  • Portable phone charger (keep fully charged)
  • Whistle to signal for help

First Aid

  • Adhesive bandages, gauze, medical tape
  • Antiseptic wipes
  • Pain relievers (ibuprofen, paracetamol)
  • Prescribed medications (7-day supply)
  • Allergy medications if needed

Documents and Money

  • Copies of ID, insurance, and medical information in a waterproof bag
  • Cash in small denominations (ATMs and card machines may be down)
  • Emergency contact list (written, not just in your phone)

Clothing and Shelter

  • Change of clothes appropriate for the season
  • Rain poncho
  • Emergency blanket (space blanket)
  • Sturdy shoes

Tools

  • Multi-tool or Swiss army knife
  • Duct tape
  • Bin bags (shelter, waterproofing, waste)
  • Matches or lighter in a waterproof container

Where to Keep It

  • In a grab-and-go bag near your front door
  • A smaller version in your car
  • Check and refresh every 6 months (rotate food and water, check batteries)
