Winter Weather Survival Guide — Stay Warm and Safe

June 10, 2026

Dressing for Winter

The layering system is key to staying warm without overheating:

  1. Base layer: Moisture-wicking fabric (merino wool or synthetic) — moves sweat away from skin
  2. Mid layer: Insulating layer (fleece, down, or wool) — traps body heat
  3. Outer layer: Windproof and waterproof shell — blocks wind and rain/snow

Winter Driving

  • Check tyres before the season (minimum 3mm tread, consider winter tyres)
  • Keep fuel tank at least half full
  • Clear all snow and ice before driving
  • Increase following distance on slippery roads
  • Keep an emergency kit in the boot: blanket, torch, snacks, water

Home Winterisation

  • Insulate exposed pipes to prevent freezing
  • Service your heating system before cold weather arrives
  • Seal gaps around windows and doors
  • Keep gutters clear to prevent ice dams
  • Set heating to at least 15°C even when away to prevent pipe freeze

Health in Winter

RiskPrevention
HypothermiaDress in layers, limit exposure, recognise symptoms (shivering, confusion)
FrostbiteCover extremities (fingers, toes, ears, nose), limit time in wind chill below -15°C

  • Christmas markets and winter festivals

Energy Saving Tips

  • Lower thermostat by 1°C — saves roughly 3% on heating bills
  • Use curtains strategically: open during sunny hours, close at dusk
  • Heat only the rooms you are using
  • Wear a warm sweater indoors instead of cranking up the heat
